Meet our local travel specialists and learn about the diversity of things you could do and micro group travel in The Top End, Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhem Land
The Top End comprises the Darwin Region, Kakadu, Katherine and Arnhemland. Darwin is a lively harbour city and gateway to world-class nature and cultural experiences. Kakadu is a destination in its own right, too far to visit in a day. World Heritage-listed, it covers almost 20,000 square kilometres of contrasting landscapes and diverse habitats. The Arnhem Land Region is spectacular with unspoilt shores, timeless culture, rugged coastlines, remote islands, rivers teeming with fish, lush rainforest, towering escarpments and savannah woodland. Katherine to the south, incorporates the Katherine, Douglas & Daly River regions, Timber Creek & Victoria River and Borroloola & The Gulf region. You can explore the famous Nitmiluk Gorge with its hidden natural wonders and a rich indigenous and pioneering history.
Any time of the year is good to visit but most people avoid the humid and hot wet season. The spring shoulder season for wildlife-lovers is often very productive, as animals are out and about in bigger numbers and showing themselves off.
During the dry season from May to October, the days are sunny and the nights are mild with temperatures ranging from 21°C - 32°C . Many travellers find this time of year the most comfortable for bushwalking, hiking, camping and cycling. The wet season is from November to April and hotter (25°C - 33°C) and very humid after rains. This is also the time of year that tropical cyclones, monsoonal rains and storms occur most frequently. During the wet season, some attractions may be closed due to flooding. Many locals and experienced travellers find the wet a good time to visit nonetheless, because it’s when the land comes alive. With suitable travel arrangements and advice it is possible to enjoy travel, especially during the shoulder periods.
